Snoring heavy throughout the night is dangerous to your health and can disrupt everyone else in your house. This being the time of year for vacation, it would be a shame to let your snoring or sleep apnea derail your family vacation. You and your family can get a more restful night’s sleep whenever you come to our office for sleep apnea treatment.

Our Novi MI dental office has been treating sleep apnea for many years, and we’ve seen our treatments greatly improve a person’s quality of life. Most people believe that sleep apnea is just simple snoring, but sleep apnea is an overall health concern. Today we want to show you a sleep apnea appliance that you can use while you travel.

Why Sleep Apnea is Dangerous to Your Health

Sleep apnea is much more than simple snoring. This problem occurs whenever you experience pauses in breathing during sleep. People with severe sleep apnea usually experience anywhere about 30 pauses in breathing an hour. During those pauses in breathing the blood pressure will rise because your body is in distress. If you have frequent rises in blood pressure, the blood pressure will stay high throughout the day. Many people with sleep apnea face an elevated risk of problems like stroke or heart disease.

Even more concerning, sleep apnea can cause people to stop breathing altogether. If you’re a football fan, you probably know of Reggie White. He was  star and Hall of Famer who won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Pakcers. White unfortunately died due to complications from sleep apnea.

There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form of sleep apnea, and it occurs whenever soft tissue blocks the airway during sleep.

Treat Sleep Apnea Without the CPAP

The traditional standard treatment is a CPAP. The CPAP is still the gold standard of treatment, but people find the treatment uncomfortable. In fact, studies have found that about 50 percent of people who have been prescribed a CPAP actually use the device. That’s a problem given that the CPAP only works whenever you’re wearing it. The CPAP uses a hose, mask, and machine, so it’s easy to see how it could disrupt your sleep and those around you.

If you have mild to moderate sleep apnea, we can usually help the problem with a custom oral appliance. The appliance fits perfectly over the lower teeth and pushes the jawbone forward to keep the airway open during sleep. Unlike the CPAP, our custom appliances do not disrupt your sleep apnea or the sleep of your bed partners. Our patients find the appliances comfortable and usually see results within the first few days — or even sooner.

To top it all of, the oral appliance is easy to travel with. You can be comfortable during your vacation and don’t have to worry about disrupting your family at hight.

Our office has helped countless patients overcome their sleep apnea issues. Our consultations are FREE, so you have nothing to lose by visiting our office. If you’re snoring or wake up feeling exhausted after a full night’s sleep, it’s time to do something about it.
