Porcelain veneers are a fantastic option. We can take spaces or teeth that are rotated and actually align those back up. They're actually small pieces of porcelain that are about the thickness of a finger nail. So very, very small. We can sometimes ... we can even do those without any preparation. If we do need any shaping it's very, very minor. What I like to do with the treatment is really sit down and listen to the patient of what they're hoping to accomplish. The nice thing about the porcelain veneers is the longevity is much longer for a porcelain veneer than it is for a composite. A composite you'll actually, things that you eat and drink, you'll actually absorb some of the staining and over a period of time, it will discolor. Whereas a porcelain stays the color that you have always had, which is great.
But you're able to build out a smile, to have a fuller smile. You're able to lengthen, close spaces, and it's an easy procedure. I'll usually take an imaging photograph first and we image that smile, sit down with the patient, if there's anything we want to change on that we're able to change that.
A real exciting new development that I've been involved in for the past year or so is digital smile design. And we use that with our porcelain veneers. We're able to actually take some videos of the patient so we see how they function. We see them talking, we see where the lip falls. We see, where when they smile, how much teeth that they actually show. And we actually can digitally use the facial analysis and algorithms to digitally give them that perfect smile. And what we do is we have them in before and we actually just have a small little impression where they'll be able to preview in 3D in their mouth before we ever start treatment, what they're final result will be. And it is amazing. We take a little video, put it up on the screen for them, and let them see who they can be. And I'm really excited about that and providing that for our patients.
