Caring for Baby Teeth: What to Expect

Our Novi, MI dentist’s office knows that proper dental hygiene begins as soon as a baby is born, even before their first tooth shows up. Within the first few days of your baby’s life, begin cleaning their gums by gently wiping them with a clean, moist washcloth. As soon as their first tooth appears, tooth decay is possible.

A baby’s first four teeth usually push through the gums between the ages of six and 12 months. As soon as teeth are visible, you should begin brushing them with fluoride toothpaste. Use an age-appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste that amounts to no more than a smear the size of a grain of rice. As soon as your child has two teeth that touch, begin flossing in between their teeth at least once a day.

For children ages three to six years old, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to remind them to brush for two minutes and to not swallow the toothpaste. You should continue helping your child brush their teeth until they can effectively brush their own teeth.

Creating Good Dental Health Habits for Kids

Experts have the same brushing and flossing recommendations for children as they do for adults. All adults and children should brush their teeth at least twice a day and floss once per day. For kids, it’s important to develop healthy habits by creating a routine. As a parent, help your child brush and floss in the morning and evening, so they learn to expect it during those times.

It’s also important to make sure your kids are brushing and flossing properly. To thoroughly clean the teeth, brushing should last about two minutes. There are several ways to make brushing more enjoyable, especially for younger children. Play or sing a song to encourage your child to brush for long enough and make the experience a happy one.

First Dental Visit

As soon as your child gets their first tooth, call us at 248-697-2487 to schedule their first dental visit with Dr. Ross. According to ADA recommendations, a child should see a dentist for their first visit within six months of their first tooth coming in.  The earlier you can get your child comfortable with going to the dentist, the better.

At Dr. James Ross, Family, Cosmetic & Laser Dentistry of Novi, MI, when we see a child for their first dental visit, we examine their mouth and take note of how everything is growing and developing. We will also clean their teeth and gums, and discuss any habits that may affect their teeth.

To help your child feel more comfortable before and during a trip to the dentist, try to make the appointment for in the morning when children tend to be more cooperative. Also, talk about the appointment with your child in a way that is positive and encouraging.

We are passionate about helping every member of your family maintain optimal oral health. We are a true family practice that enjoys spending time with each member of your family. Call us today at 248-697-2487 to schedule an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you.
